The purpose of the library is to make available knowledge, information and documentation concerning the applied arts and industrial design. The library should inspire the development of new design and be a source for research of design and the history of art and design.
The subject areas dealt with by the library are the applied arts and industrial design: this includes furniture, fashion and costume, glass, ceramics, textiles; metalwork and jewellery; book production; graphic design and posters, and the traditional art of Asia.
At the library it is possible to find books, periodicals, pamphlets about design and the applied arts. Also available for study are original hand-made and industrially-produced works in book form. e.g.:
- Fashion magazines
- Graphical models and ornamentation
- Wallpaper samples
- Textile pattern books
- Letterpress and other graphic printing methods
- Graphics editing
- Paper samples
- Book-binding – publisher’s binding and binding by hand
- Catalogues of merchandise and other commercial printed matter
- Catalogues from design museums from all over the world
Users of the library include craftsmen and women, designers, students and researchers from design schools, universities and museums, pupils from technical schools, set-designers, private collectors and dealers, conservators as well as people with a general interest in the field.
All are welcome.
